PROGRAMS
EMERGING PROJECT GRANT
(one grant of $20,000 per project/per year)
Deadline: June 30th (or the first working day after this date)
Results should be announced by September 1st
Aim of program
This program is intended as a springboard to initiate and promote an innovative, non-funded research component which is not part of the researcher's regular scientific program. Through this program, the scientist (junior and senior investigator) will be able to verify the feasibility of an innovative concept and obtain preliminary data that will allow him or her to submit a complete application to the major granting agencies. The parallel aim of this program is the emergence of a team with the common objective of initiating and promoting fruitful collaborations.
Eligibility criteria
- Must be a regular member of the Network for Oral and Bone Health Research;
- Reside in Quebec while using the funds granted by the Network;
- Members who have made a previously successful application to this program as a Principal Investigator may not reapply until one year after the end of their award (e.g. those awarded in September 2007 for a one-year period may apply again for the June 2009 competition).
Support
- A maximum amount of $20,000 may be granted to a project;
- However, for a larger-scale project, it is possible to obtain funding over a 2-year period, for a maximum of $40,000.
Required documents
- Complete the "Emerging Project Grant Application Form";
- Provide a copy of the biosketch1 (see the description below) of each researcher involved in the project.
Information on funding
The funds allocated once the project is approved will be disbursed in two instalments. A first instalment of 75% will be disbursed immediately after approval. Within 10 months for a one-year project and 20 months for a 2-year project after the funding is granted, the researcher must provide the Network coordinating group with proof of deposit of a grant application (executive summary, budget and letter/notice of receipt or evaluation report) and a progress report (one- or two-page executive summary, list of abstracts or publications) to obtain disbursement of the remaining 25% of the grant. For example, a project with a $20,000 budget will first receive 75% of the amount ($15,000) and, in a second stage, 25% of the amount ($5,000) once the researcher submits an application to CIHR or other major agencies.
General conditions
The application must contain the following information (see the "Emerging Project Grant Application Form" - font Times New Roman 12 points, margin of 2 cm):
- The research team (1 page);
- The executive summary of the project (1 page);
- The experimental approach/methodology (maximum 2 pages);
- The reasons that make this project an "Emerging Project Grant" (1 page);
- The budget and justification (maximum 2 pages);
- The ethical acceptability form;
- The researchers' signatures.
The project must be consistent with the Network's mission and research priorities and lead to an application for funding to a recognized agency within the year.
Evaluation criteria (as used in the past few years)
Project:
- Pertinence of the project in relation to the Network's mission and objectives;
- Clarity of objectives;
- Reasons that make this project an "Emerging Project Grant";
- Probability of success as a springboard (external grants);
- Overall scientific quality (e.g., hypotheses and objectives, design, analysis, validity of measurements, quality of samples/populations (selections), statistics, etc.).
Budget:
- Eligibility of expenses;
- Realism;
- Justification.
.
Ethics:
- The project is in compliance with current ethical standards;
- Approval by the local ethics committee in progress or completed.
